Kimberleys – The Real Cattle Muster

Ride with the true cattle(wo)men of the Kimberleys in Western Australia who have been preserving the experience and history of the stockmen, the cattle musters and the pioneering years of one of Australia’s most beautiful regions.

You will be joining an authentic 5 days / 6 nights cattle mustering experience on one of Australia’s most historic and iconic cattle station in the Kimberleys. This is not a horse riding holiday but an authentic cattle muster where we will give a selected small group of only six guests the opportunity to team up with an experienced stockman end enjoy an experience of a lifetime.

When you saddle up for your ride in the morning you will feel transported back in time, into the scenes from Baz Luhrmann’s movie AUSTRALIA. Yes, you are not mistaken, this is where some of the filming took place. So, enjoy the view from the back of the horse and the cattle work that awaits you! This experience takes you deep into the Kimberley bush, where you will spend six to seven hours a day in the saddle engaging in cattle work and riding through the extraordinary landscape of sandstone escarpments, waterholes, alluvial plains, and tidal rivers following old stock routes and drover trails. On horseback, we’ll be exploring remote river valleys, old stock routes used by drovers and cameliers, breath-taking gorges and wide open spaces. You will ride through landscapes and sceneries which will take your breath away.

This Kimberleys cattle station experience is true bucket list material.

SCHEDULE

Day 1 Arrival
You will be picked up in Kununurra around mid-day and meet the crew and the horses. Plans for the next day will be discussed during dinner.

Day 2 – 6
Since this is an authentic cattle muster, it’s the animals and nature who dictate the schedule and what you will be doing varies from day to day. However, a typical day would be an early rise, breakfast, saddle up and ride out to the area being mustered that day. You will either take a small mob of coacher cattle with you, or you will muster them up as you ride along. These quiet cattle are held by the riders while other riders run cattle into the coacher mob, some days with the aid of helicopter and bull buggy. Riders then walk the cattle back to the yards where they are processed (branded, ear marked, castrated, drenched, etc.). When that’s said and done the cattle will be walked back out again.

Some days you might be based at the station and for a couple days/nights the whole team could be camping out in swags (Australian for sleeping bag), sleeping under the stars.

Day 7 Departure
Transfer to Kununurra after breakfast. On the way back to Kununurra, your host will take you into the small town of Wyndham and up to the Five Rivers Lookout with spectacular views to be enjoyed. This will be followed by a visit to the local bakery with an opportunity to taste a crocodile or a delicious barramundi pie. On the way back to Kununurra, there will also be a stop at the beautiful Marlgu World Heritage Bird Reserve (Parry Lagoon). This is a haven for tropical water birds of many kinds and freshwater crocodiles which can be watched from the boardwalk. This is definitely well worth a visit!
