Follow the Drovers Trail – Kimberleys

Follow the Drovers Trail  – Kimberleys

Ride with the true cattle(wo)men of the Kimberleys in Western Australia who have been preserving the experience and history of the stockmen, the cattle musters and the pioneering years of one of Australia’s most beautiful regions.

You will be joining a 7 day horse riding adventure in the magnificient Kimberley region, on two of the most historic over 700,000 acres large cattle stations. When you saddle up for your ride in the morning, you will feel transported back in time, into the scenes from Baz Luhrmann’s  movie AUSTRALIA. Yes, you are not mistaken, this is where some of the filming took place.

By horseback, we’ll be exploring remote river valleys, old stock routes used by drovers and cameliers, breath-taking gorges and wide open spaces.

SCHEDULE

After a warm welcome at Digger’s, and a relaxing evening around the camp fire, you will enjoy a peaceful night in one of the station’s comfortable bush huts or bunkhouse rooms.  Rising early with the sun on the Cockburn Ranges, we saddle up and begin our adventure by horseback.  Over the next seven days, you will have the memorable experience of riding willing and sure-footed horses through breathtaking landscapes.

Averaging about 25 to 30 kms per day, riders need to be fit and comfortable riding in the bush at a walk, trot and canter, when terrain and temperatures allow.

STAGE ONE

Heading south from Digger’s Rest, we follow the King River Valley, picking up brumby and cattle pads over spinifex ridges, cantering along ti tree flats and making our way along the creek systems of the King.  The first few days we take in the rolling Erskine Ranges to the East and the sandstone escarpments of the Cockburn Ranges to West and follow the old stock routes of drovers and stockmen.

STAGE TWO

The next two days will take us through spring country to the base of the Tier Ranges, and back on to the southern most reach of the King River system.  We follow a tributary of the King River, riding across an open valley with some spectacular rock formations.  Our last camp on leaves us once again with a spectacular view of the Cockburn Ranges.
